The popular A-Ma culture has a long history in Macau. Some famous Cantonese opera troupes are
usually invited to Macau to perform each year, praying for divine mercy, good weather, safe sea journey and peaceful
lives.

The A-Ma Festival is also a good way to promote traditional Cantonese operas.

For this year, various
Cantonese operas will be staged at the open ground in front of A-Ma Temple from 23 to 27 April. The operas have
double function: to reward the mercy of A-Ma and to entertain the public.

of Emperor Daoguang (1820-1850) in the Qing Dynasty.

The art form soon emerged as the most prevalent regional operatic
genre in Guangdong Province and today enjoys extensive popularity in Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao and much of the
expatriate Chinese communities.

Following its successful inclusion in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible
Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009, Cantonese Opera has gained increasing public attention and popularity.
